First Generation (2005-Present)

It was the first crossover SUV marketed by General Motors in the segment of compact sport utility vehicles. The predecessor model to the first generation Chevrolet Equinox was Chevrolet Tracker. After the launch in 2005, high performance sports version, Equinox SS was introduced in 2008.

It was closely related to Opel Torrent, Suzuki XL7, Saturn Vue and Pontiac Torrent, but no Chevrolet Equinox models were sold in Mexico.

The base version was powered by a 3.4 liter LNJ V6 version, while the 3.6 liter V6 engine was optionally available. The transmission options included 5-speed and 6-speed automatic gear-shifts.

With the powerful V6 engine, it achieved impressive fuel economy of 22 miles per gallon in the city premises and 32 miles per gallon on the highway roads.

Coming to physical dimensions of Chevrolet Equinox, it had a mid-size wheel-base of 112.5 inches, length of 188.8 inches, width of 71.4 inches and height of 69.3 inches.

Chevrolet Equinox SS

Chevrolet Equinox SS featured more powerful V6 engine and lowered ride height. With the V6 engine, sports model could accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 7 seconds. The V6 engine in sports version was mated to 6-speed automatic transmission.

The new Equinox comes in trendy outlook, and top notch safety features including but not limited to curtain side air bags, front side air bags, antiskid system, traction control, and antilock braking system.

The next generation Equinox is expected to be released by the end of 2011. It is expected to be priced in the range of $28,000 – $34,000, but there’s no official confirmation on the same.
